November 6, 2002 Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold, Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. Robert Frost |

This week's music selection! What a treat! We have some phenomenal musicians at the store this week! Thursday November 7, Mahlon's Jazz series presents: Frank Gratkowski, solo and duos with Ian Davis As a result of the hard work of Walter Davis of the Alliance for Improvised Music, Frank Gratkowski, a widely respected reedman and composer is visiting the General Store Café from Cologne, Germany. Frank, an esteemed composer, plays alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, and flute. He will perform both solo and duo. Beginning the saxophone at age 16, studying at the Cologne Conservatory of Music, Frank has been giving solo performance since 1990 throughout Europe, Canada, and the USA. Currently he gives workshops and teaches saxophone and ensembles in Cologne, Hannover, and at the Berlin Conservatories of Music. Ian Davis began his music career as an R&B drummer in the Beaufort, SC group, The Barons and Blood. He played fusion in the 70's, alt-pop in the mid 80's, improvisational music in the late 80's, and in the 90's he played with Blue Chair, Mind Sirens, Bicentennial Quarters, Trailer Bride, Chris Stamey/Kirk Ross, and the North Carolina Jazz Ensemble. In 1995, he moved to the Bay Area, where he played with the Scott Rosenberg/Matt Ingalls large improvising ensemble Micro Collective Orchestra, forming Micro-East Collective when he returned to the Triangle. Friday November 8, Bill and Libby Hicks "Combining their passion for traditional music with their love for each other, Bill and Libby Hicks might be the best husband/wife duo in the entire genre. Bill's nimble fiddling perfectly complements his wife's guitar strums, and their voices meld to create haunting harmonies." ...MSN Citysearch 3/15/01 Bill and Libby have been mainstays of the NC traditional music scene since the 1970s. Bill Hicks is a founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers, fiddling, singing, writing, and recording with them through their first decade. Performing with his wife Libby since 1982, the two have had plenty of time to merge minds and styles and have developed a simpatico duet style on fiddle, guitar and keyboard that often makes people check to see if it really is only two people playing. In the past 10 years, along with performing and playing for dances, they have turned their attention to passing along the fun of old-time music. On several occasions they been on the staff of the Augusta Heritage Workshops on the campus of Davis and Elkins College in WVA, teaching musicians from all over the world about the distinguishing points of southern Appalachian fiddle and guitar styles and old-time string band singing. Last year they were the staff musicians at the National Storytelling Conference in Kingsport, Tennessee. Saturday November 9, ESP

In keeping with the spirit of a general store, it is our hope that this website can enhance these characteristics that make the café so unique in today's impersonal business world. The website will include a community forum to allow a space for thoughts, reflection, and conversation, as well as act as an old fashion trading post, where users will be able to post things for sale, wanted, or lost/found, etc. In addition to this forum, we would like to include any literary talents of our fellow neighbors, all ages welcomed.
