"Thanksgiving"

The year has turned its circle, The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in, And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures, The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway~ Thanksgiving comes again!

UPDATE: Burrito Bash for the Arts - A Big Hit !

Last Wednesday, the General Store Café was packed as people attended the fundraiser for the Chatham County Art Council. Seats were in shortage and the outside table and chairs were brought in to accommodate the crowd. More than 80 burritos were sold as young and old listened to the spirited music of Tommy and friends! The festive atmosphere and community fellowship was felt by all in attendance. We wholeheartedly thank everyone who came out to support this event and contribute to such a great cause. If you missed it, don’t worry, we hope to be able to do this again in the near future!

Have you seen our Bathrooms lately?

We may not have a jacuzzi bath, but we do have tile mosaic floors designed by Sally Erickson of Chatham County. Come in and relax and be awe-inspired by her art! Her most recent addition is the installation of the "serpent" floor in the men’s bathroom. We have people who say they come not just for the food, but for the artwork on our bathroom floors. (We're not kidding!) Come admire her fantastic tile work!

Tile Artist - Sally Erickson

Sally Erickson moved to Chatham County in 1979. A native of Washington State, she has made art since she was a child. She describes her home as an on-going work in progress and it is there that she taught herself ceramic tile installation and began experiments with broken tile mosaics. Two years ago she took the opportunity for a six-month sabbatical from her profession as a psychotherapist. During her sabbatical she pursued writing, dancing and, after wandering into a local art therapist’s studio, an intensive phase of art-making. She began to paint daily, made several pieces of rustic cedar furniture. At that time she also approached then-owners Becket and Richard about installing a broken-tile mosaic floor in the women’s bathroom at the General Store Café. They agreed. Since that time, in addition to the installation of the "serpent" floor in the men’s bathroom at the General Store, commissioned by current owners Roya, Vance, Joyce, Alyson, Bjorn and Farzin, she has designed and installed floors, showers, and bath surrounds in several homes in Chatham County and Chapel Hill. While she enjoys spreading her creativity around she especially likes doing public installations where many people can enjoy the fruit of her labor.

Her sabbatical offered new energy and insight in her counseling and mentoring work and she has since integrated art-making and dancing as regular parts of her non-sabbatical lifestyle. Not being one to rest on her spiritual laurels, this past July she jumped at the chance to spend 11 days in the woods in northern Tennessee. Three of those days she spent fasting alone on a solo "vision quest." She sees the integration these experiences with art, dance, writing and now especially with nature, manifesting in her life as a "young" elder woman and loves being a part of the Chatham County community in that capacity.

Sally lives with her 17 year old daughter Sarah at Blue Heron Farm, 5 miles north of Pittsboro. You can see her occasionally at a table in the General Store in the morning eating granola with homemade yogurt (yuuuummmm!) while she drinks coffee and pays bills and also not infrequently, with her boyfriend Tony Godwin on Thursdays evenings at jazz night as well.

Thursday, November 21 - The Mahlon Hoard Trio (jazz)

We are delighted to present the Mahlon Hoard Trio. Thanks to Mahlon's dedication, the Cafe has been able to present outstanding jazz on Thursday nights this fall season. This group features Mahlon Hoard himself on Tenor and Soprano Saxes, Rick Lassiter on Acoustic Bass, and Ian Davis on Percussive Drumset.

Mahlon has played and/or recorded with former Miles Davis music director and keyboardist Adam Holzman, Rodney Holmes (Santana, Zawinul), and Matt "Guitar" Murphy (Blues Brothers).

Rick played bass for 3 years with Pop-Icon Lisa Loeb and is a sought after bassist, producer, and recording artist.

Ian Davis plays and records with many of the who's -who in the world of free-improvisation, plays a key role in the success of Umbrella records and is visionary and founder of the highly-acclaimed Micro-East Collective.

Friday, November 22 - Jamuna (russian folk music)

"With acoustic guitar in hand ... Jamuna takes you on a passionate Russian journey."
www.jamuna.us

A graduate of Moscow's Classical School of Music, Russia's leading college for jazz and popular music, Jamuna, earned a degree as a conductor and music teacher. The granddaughter of a desert nomad, and a Communist Youth League member as a child, Jamuna was attracted to spirituality and often stole moments to go to church even though religion was kept under wraps in the former Soviet Union.

She left mainstream music soon after college, preferring to play on the streets of Moscow ... and in nearby forests to "really reach the people, and find myself.".

From 1989 to 1994, she toured extensively in Poland and Germany with a group of Polish artists, singing for the Solidarity movement. In 1991, she sang in Moscow subway stations, earning quite a lot more than a typical factory or office job. With thousands of other Russians, she went to the Russian "White House" to protect Boris Yeltsin when the communist party in the Soviet parliament revolted against the glastnost policies introduced by Gorbachev.

Jamuna’s performances weave a rich tapestry of traditional, gypsy, and Soviet-era folk songs, set in their historical and cultural context by Jamuna’s charming commentary. She draws from her own experiences as a witness to, and occasional participant in, recent Soviet history. Today her albums are selling well, and she has made two excellent award-winning videos.

Saturday, November 23 - Tad Dreis (folk pop)

"Armed only with an acoustic guitar, voice and occasional harmonica, Tad Dreis delivers Beatleseque tunes with a playful, sometimes surreal lyrical bent."
www.TadDreis.com

Following the release last year of his cd "Yours Asleep," Tad Dreis's folk-pop style has been described as "infectious and tongue-twistingly pretty" by Splendid e-zine. His combination of literate lyrics and melodic pop savvy prompted The Spectator to describe him as "what Leonard Cohen would sound like if he lightened up," while Indie-Music.com focused on his sense of humor and "mischievous approach to songwriting." Come see what the buzz is about and catch previews of material from his new cd "Solitaire for Two," which is due in December!
