| Thursday, November 21 - The Mahlon Hoard Trio (jazz) We are delighted to present the Mahlon Hoard Trio. Thanks to Mahlon's dedication, the Cafe has been able to present outstanding jazz on Thursday nights this fall season. This group features Mahlon Hoard himself on Tenor and Soprano Saxes, Rick Lassiter on Acoustic Bass, and Ian Davis on Percussive Drumset. Mahlon has played and/or recorded with former Miles Davis music director and keyboardist Adam Holzman, Rodney Holmes (Santana, Zawinul), and Matt "Guitar" Murphy (Blues Brothers). Rick played bass for 3 years with Pop-Icon Lisa Loeb and is a sought after bassist, producer, and recording artist. Ian Davis plays and records with many of the who's -who in the world of free-improvisation, plays a key role in the success of Umbrella records and is visionary and founder of the highly-acclaimed Micro-East Collective. Friday, November 22 - Jamuna (russian folk music) "With acoustic guitar in hand ... Jamuna takes you on a passionate Russian journey."www.jamuna.us A graduate of Moscow's Classical School of Music, Russia's leading college for jazz and popular music, Jamuna, earned a degree as a conductor and music teacher. The granddaughter of a desert nomad, and a Communist Youth League member as a child, Jamuna was attracted to spirituality and often stole moments to go to church even though religion was kept under wraps in the former Soviet Union. She left mainstream music soon after college, preferring to play on the streets of Moscow ... and in nearby forests to "really reach the people, and find myself.". From 1989 to 1994, she toured extensively in Poland and Germany with a group of Polish artists, singing for the Solidarity movement. In 1991, she sang in Moscow subway stations, earning quite a lot more than a typical factory or office job. With thousands of other Russians, she went to the Russian "White House" to protect Boris Yeltsin when the communist party in the Soviet parliament revolted against the glastnost policies introduced by Gorbachev. Jamunas performances weave a rich tapestry of traditional, gypsy, and Soviet-era folk songs, set in their historical and cultural context by Jamunas charming commentary. She draws from her own experiences as a witness to, and occasional participant in, recent Soviet history. Today her albums are selling well, and she has made two excellent award-winning videos. Saturday, November 23 - Tad Dreis (folk pop) "Armed only with an acoustic
guitar, voice and occasional harmonica, Tad Dreis delivers Beatleseque tunes with
a playful, sometimes surreal lyrical bent." Following the release last year of his cd "Yours Asleep," Tad Dreis's folk-pop style has been described as "infectious and tongue-twistingly pretty" by Splendid e-zine. His combination of literate lyrics and melodic pop savvy prompted The Spectator to describe him as "what Leonard Cohen would sound like if he lightened up," while Indie-Music.com focused on his sense of humor and "mischievous approach to songwriting." Come see what the buzz is about and catch previews of material from his new cd "Solitaire for Two," which is due in December! | ||
