"The Snowstorm "

Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,
Arrives the snow, and, driven o'er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air
Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,
And veils the farmhouse at the garden's end.
The sled and traveler stopped, the courier's feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of storm ...

Ralph Waldo Emerson

MUSIC THIS WEEK

Thursday, December 12 - The Mahlon Hoard Quartet (Jazz)

Featuring John Wilson on drums, Kevin VanSant on guitar, and Rick Lassiter on bass.

Friday, December 13 - Claudia Lopez Bascunan and Myrna Bascunan Lopez (Chilean folk)

This mother and daughter duo share the richness of their Chilean heritage. Living in Chile near the South Pole, Claudia grew up singing with her family, sharing the love of these traditional songs.

AND Maia Derewicz (singer/songwriter)

As a singer-songwriter from North Carolina, Maia draws her inspirations from her various travels which have taken her around the world as well as the Baha'i Faith, a world religion based on the premise of the oneness of human kind. Maia is also inspired by the power of faith, the search for truth and her belief in divine guidance to foster spiritual growth. Maia feels blessed to have the gift of music, which she considers to be the ladder to the soul. She is currently traveling the country with her husband Mark.

Saturday, December 14 - Trilogy (folk/swing)

We’re excited to welcome back Trilogy, entertaining us with their folk music! Cathy and Richard Edwards and Sheila Warner are local singer-songwriters that play an array of original ballads combining soulful lyrics and beautiful harmonies. Trilogy will be joined by several excellent guest musicians including Mahlon Hoard on saxophone, John Frye on Native American Flute and percussion, and Liz Tedesco on piano. Please join us at 8pm for a festive evening of music, singing, and bells-a-ringing!

Sheila Warner and Richard and Brooksie Edwards first met in 1998, when Sheila was a finalist in the Triangle Folk Music Society’s first songwriting contest. Over the next two years, they shared the stage at local coffee houses and showcases, until their fate as a trio was sealed when they moved in across the street from one another in June of 2000. They have been performing together ever since, developing a loyal following for their blend of swing and folk; standards and originals; and a cappella harmonies and solo performances. Their combination of three-part vocals and a range of songwriting styles makes for a show that is both memorable and diverse.

Chatham December Events Calendar!

This is a new section of the newsletter where we highlight some of the many upcoming events in Chatham in December. If you have an upcoming event you want us to highlight in this newsletter, please email info@thegeneralstorecafe.com

Thursday, December 12 - Annual World AIDS Day Prayer Service of Hope and Remembrance

Chatham County will be celebrating it's ninth annual World AIDS Day Prayer Service of Hope and Remembrance on Thursday, December 12th at 7pm at the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church (across from Hardees on 64). It's an incredibly moving service that involves storytelling, gospel singing, poetry, a candlelight vigil walk around the town circle, and much more.

Year after year it serves as a grounding force - reinstituting faith in community and the warmth and compassion of Chatham County's residents. Among those participating will be Carrie Bolton and the Alston Omega Choir, Tom Maxwell (fomerly of Squirrel Nut Zippers), and Louise Kessell (storyteller). It'll be a wonderfully warm event!
