"A Serenade for New Year's Eve"

The old year departed, how swiftly it flew,
'Tis gone, and with rapture we welcome the new,
We trust a bright morning will dawn on your eyes,
And sun beams unclouded illumine the skies.
Then wake from your slumbers, our serenade hear,
We wish you a happy,--a happy New Year!

A New Year Full of Changes!

Store is now open from 7:30am - 8:00pm almost EVERY DAY with dinner starting at 6:00pm (read on for more details)!

Due to popular demand the café is extending its hours of operation.

We are now open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30am to 8:00pm, Thursday and Friday from 7:30am to 10:30pm, and on Saturday from 9:00am to 10:30pm, though on Sundays we are still closed so that we can rest (at least for now - but let us know if you would want to see Sunday hours as well).

During open hours we serve breakfast until 11:00am, hot lunch until 3:00pm, deli items until 6:00pm and dinner from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Thursday through Saturday we have live music from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.

So now you can stop by for dinner any day of the week or do a little afternoon shopping after lunch.

Yes, the suggestion cards really do work! Extending store hours was one of the more common and popular recommendations so we decided to keep the store open longer in January. We appreciate the time you take to tell us your thoughts! So - spread the word to all your neighbors and friends - so that we may continue these new hours in February as well!

So, come in and unwind after work! Have a cup of coffee, a beer, or a soft-drink, or better yet stay for dinner!

Milestone Moment: 18,000th Green Chili Burrito Sold to Amanda Mellenburger of Apex

The General Store Café sold it’s 18,000th green chili burrito this past week to Amanda Mellenberger, a Spartan originally from Michigan. Amanda, a green chili conneseiur currently lives in Apex and is no stranger to the General Store Café, as she thrives on a regular diet of the flavorful, green Chili Burrito.

Thank you Amanda for helping us reach our 18,000th milestone. Keep eating those burritos with reckless abandonment as we move toward burrito number 19,000 and 20,000 !

2002 New Year’s Eve Bash!

Thank you to all who shared in the fun, helping us usher in the New Year.

New Year’s Eve was a big hit with prizes galore given out at the door, dancing to the wonderful music of Shabda Shruti and dining in elegance.

The band Trilogy dressed up in 1920’s garb, and the evening ended in a great conga dance (as you can see at the very top of this newsletter)!

We hope to see you again at the next New Year’s Eve Bash (and of course many times before that during the coming days, weeks and months)!

NEW! Belgian Waffles for Breakfast: Yummy!

The General Store Café is pleased to extend our breakfast menu to include hot Belgian Waffles off the waffle iron. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - so start your day off with a warm, hearty breakfast. In addition, to waffles, we also serve bagels, croissants, and quiches.

NEW! Introducing Jim Johansen, our new Chef!

We are very excited about our new Chef, Jim Johansen, who has started off the new year by offering a zestful and eclectic array of foods guaranteed to tantalize your taste buds! Jim shares our commitment to provide delicious, healthful, whole foods! Jim describes his cooking as a melting pot of ethnic traditions. He uses the strong flavors of different ethnic cuisines to complement each other, for example, mixing Carribbean and Thai flavors. We just cannot wait to try his New Mexican Clam Chowder or his Indian Palak Paneer!

Jim’s culinary beginnings date back to the tender age of four when he worked in his father’s Barbecue and Donut restaurant in downtown Orlando, Florida, earning 10 cents a day and a donut for good behavior. Having learned the family tradition of flavorful, good food from his Creole cooking grandmother, Jim expanded his interest in strong flavors and spices, and began selling hot sauces and fire lip salmon jerky via catalog. His hot sauces earned him the name Dr. Pepper, and Firelip Jim (though he is committed to only providing just the right amount of spice in the General Store Cafe food, so that it will suit all palates).

Jim currently resides in Pittsboro. He came to North Carolina where he earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Duke and is currently also the Chief Operating Officer of Nanolume Technology Inc, dreaming of a world full of nano-bots and nano-machines (when he is not cooking that is).

In addition to being a great chef, he is also committed to the idea of restoring the General Store Café to the nostalgic memories of what a General Store used to provide its patrons: bulk foods, frozen and prepared foods. All in good time!

MUSIC THIS WEEK

Thursday, January 9 - The Mahlon Hoard Trio featuring Rick Lassiter and Ian Davis (Jazz)

We are delighted to present the Mahlon Hoard Trio. This group features Mahlon Hoard himself on Tenor and Soprano Saxes, Rick Lassiter on Acoustic Bass, and Ian Davis on Percussive Drums.

Mahlon has played and/or recorded with former Miles Davis music director and keyboardist Adam Holzman, Rodney Holmes (Santana, Zawinul), and Matt "Guitar" Murphy (Blues Brothers).

Rick played bass for 3 years with Pop-Icon Lisa Loeb and is a sought after bassist, producer, and recording artist.

Ian Davis plays and records with many of the who's -who in the world of free-improvisation, plays a key role in the success of Umbrella records and is visionary and founder of the highly-acclaimed Micro-East Collective.

Friday, January 10 - Matt Daniels (Rock)

Matt Daniels is the former lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player for Raleigh based band Chasing Edison. Matt has played in several bands over the years covering many musical styles. His versatile vocal ability and rhythmic guitar playing allow him to switch effortlessly from a ballad to modern rock. Matt's solo acoustic act draws from his many musical influences from the last 30 years covering artists like the Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead to modern day acts like The Dave Matthews Band and The Bare Naked Ladies.

Matt also includes original material that blends a pop rock sound with introspective lyrics. Matt literally knows hundreds of songs and is always happy to please a crowd by doing requests, which has lead to him being referred to as the "human jukebox." Matt is a native of Central New York and now resides in Pittsboro, NC.

Saturday, January 11 - Deborah Trauley and Jon Zachary (Bluegrass, Blues, and Folk)

Deborah Trauley and Jon Zachary perform original folk music with acoustic guitar accompaniment and two part harmony. Both accomplished musicians, each share a passion for music as reflected in their singing of bluegrass, blues, and folk music.

Jon Zachary describes himself as a storyteller of song. The songs on Jon's first CD, Turn on a Point, were recorded with the simplicity and clarity that best serves them. Jon's voice is warm and genuine and perfectly supports the often emotional, sometimes down-right funny material. As one early reviewer put it, "This is not background music! Don't listen to it until you're ready to listen to the lyrics."
