The Year's at the Spring

The Year's
at the Spring
And the day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hillside's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn:
God's in his heaven-
All's right with the world!

Door Prizes and more! Monday, June 16th (6:30 pm)
Join
us for an interesting evening with NC Field Rep of American
Forests, Guy Meilleur, who will be presenting a powerpoint presentation
on "The National Register of Big Trees" and another titled, "From
Gray to Green," which focuses on the value of tree canopy in developing
areas like Chatham County! Also--there will be door prizes of five locally
adapted trees! Presentation will break and allow time for questions and
comments.
Across the street from the General Store Cafe, stands the nations
oldest living Holly Tree. This old and grand tree, which has graced
the center of Pittsboro for so many decades, is in desperate need of
some care. For years its root system has been smothered by asphalt,
struggling to provide the water and nutrients that its branches need
to live. That struggle has not been successful; the top of the tree
is dead. With community support and assistance, this tree can be saved.
Donations to save our oldest Holly Tree are being accepted by the General
Store Cafe. Please send donations for the Holly Tree to "Holly
Tree Rescue" c/o General Store Café, PO BOX 1651, Pittsboro,
NC

The Chatham
Wellness Center: A wholistic Approach
The Chatham Wellness Center opened in February, 2001, in a cozy,
early 19th Century house at the corner of Rectory and W. Salisbury
Streets in Pittsboro’s historic district. It is the culmination
of a dream of two psychotherapists, Nancy Garson-Angert, Ed.M, LPC,
and Elizabeth (Libba) Adams, MSW, LCSW. Nancy and Libba had been
introduced by a mutual friend several years earlier, and soon discovered
that they shared a vision of the kind of practice they wanted to
develop. The practice model they share uses wellness, rather than
pathology, as a foundation and starting point, focusing on clients’ strengths,
and integrating approaches to include the physical as well as the
emotional/spiritual and family/community aspects of a person’s
life.
Nancy and Libba came to this shared dream as each of them
wanted to practice more collaboratively with others. Both have
over 25
years experience, and had arrived at a wholistic approach to
their practices
through firsthand experience of how a mind/body approach can
enhance counseling outcomes. Both offer counseling and psychotherapy
for
adults, couples, and groups needing assistance with grief work,
depression, anxiety, life transitions, recovery from substance
abuse, and personal
trauma, or who simply wish to enhance personal growth. Nancy
also practices EMDR, a specialized approach for victims of traumatic
experiences, and is a certified bereavement counselor. Libba
also
works with older
children and adolescents, as well as with older adults, and professionals
wishing to acheive personal/professional balance. Nancy, who
trained at Harvard, had practiced at the Wholistic Health Center
in Carrboro;
and Libba, whose training began at Tulane, practiced at the PathWays
Center and at Deerwood Center in Chapel Hill, before moving their
practices to home offices several years ago. They decided to
collaborate, and develop the Wellness Center, in part to combat the
isolation
that private practice can bring.
Both Nancy and Libba wanted to establish
practices outside Chapel Hill/Carrboro, and were drawn to Pittsboro
for many reasons, including
its being close to Libba’s home, and convenient for Nancy,
as well as they fell in love with Pittsboro’s charm and friendly
atmosphere. At first, they explored a plan to rent office space in
town, but when their "dream house" went on the market,
it was clear that they needed to buy the house for their own practices,
and offer office space to others to rent.
The Chatham Wellness Center
offers alternative or complementary therapies, such as therapeutic
massage, acupuncture and Oriental/herbal medicine,
in addition to traditional counseling and psychotherapy. The practitioners
currently practicing at the Center along with Libba and Nancy,
include Cathy Edwards, LBMT, LPC, who practices therapeutic massage,
traditional
psychotherapy and energy psychology; Shelley Fields, LMFT, who
practices individual as well as couples’ and family therapy; and Jade
Pierce, L.Ac., who practices Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. David
Rademacher, MA, LPC, LPA, who practices psychotherapy and conducts
psychological evaluations will be joining the Center in July.
The
Chatham Wellness Center also serves as a community-service location
for massage therapists in training at the Body Therapy Institute.
Chatham Wellness Center also offers office space for rent, and
meeting space for groups and community gatherings. Retreats and workshops
for groups as well as planning meetings, and even a wine/cheese
tasting/benefit
for a community project are planned. The Wellness Center houses
a complete kitchen, and many rooms in which to spread out into breakout
sessions. The basement houses Libba’s pottery studio, and is
well-suited to those on the short side, as folks were much more "vertically-challenged" in
the 19th Century than nowadays. The overall feeling of this cozy,
rambling old house evokes memories of "my grandmother’s
house", says one neighbor. The
yard is beautifully landscaped, including rare winter honeysuckle,
and pear, peach, apricot and apple trees. In the Summer, folks
are welcome to pick pears from the heirloom pear tree in the front
yard.
There are abundant black walnuts in the Fall, available for gathering
up.
To schedule an appointment, or to establish a time to look
at office space, please call (919) 542-6868.

This Week's EVENING ENTERTAINMENT!
Thursday, June
12 – Walking Bones Jazz Trio featuring vocalist Nancy Dragotta
(Jazz)
The Walking Bones Jazz Trio, comprised of guitarists Mike Armstrong
and Chad Hallyburton, bassist playing Tom Daly, and featuring
vocalist Nancy Dragotta. The group performs a wide variety of
jazz and jazz-influenced standards and originals. The smoky vocal
stylings of Ms. Dragotta are highlighted on well-known tunes
such as "Summertime", "Stormy Weather", and "What
a Wonderful World," while she demonstrates her penchant
for belting out the blues on upbeat numbers including "Stormy
Monday." Instrumental pieces range from the slow and sweet "Stella
by Starlight" to up-tempo and surprising arrangements of "Autumn
Leaves," "Seven Steps to Heaven", and "Blue
Monk."
Whether performing tunes by jazz legends such as
Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, and Louis Armstrong, or featuring
their own originals, the Walking Bones Jazz Trio strives to gives
its audiences what they want – fun, enjoyable, accessible
jazz sounds. Friday, June 13- Fiddling with a Dulcimer
Comprised of Rick Brockner & Cora Beth Bridges. There is
a rich history of making and playing dulcimers and fiddles here
in the state of North Carolina. The first time Rick Brockner
saw a dulcimer up close he knew he could play it, even though
he knew little about the instrument. Rick purchased that dulcimer
and it has taken him on a musical journey he never dreamed of.
Cora Beth Bridges is a young and very talented new fiddler on
the North Carolina acoustic music scene. She started her training
as a classical musician. The freedom in bluegrass music is very
different from the structure of classical music. Cora Beth was
lucky to find common ground and she has been able to take off
as a great player in both worlds. When Cora Beth heard Alison
Krauss, the connection and vision of her own fiddling changed.
Her goal became to make people feel the music and evoke emotion,
just as Alison’s music did for her.
"
Fiddlin With A Dulcimer" is one of a kind music experience
that will take you back in time and into the future of acoustic
music. There is nothing else like it in the acoustic music scene
today. Come and experience the mountain music of yesteryear,
and the mountain music of the future.
Saturday, June 14- Maia Derewicz, Mark Derewicz
and Andrew Schatzberg (singer/ songwriters)
Maia Derewicz, a singer/songwriter from North Carolina, draws
her inspiration from her various travels which have taken her
around the world as well as the power of faith, the search for
truth and her belief in divine guidance to foster spiritual growth.
Maia feels blessed to have the gift of music, which she considers
to be the ladder to the soul. She will be featuring songs from
her forthcoming CD of unique spiritual folk songs. She will also
perform with her husband, Mark Derewicz as a duo.
Daybreakers Unite! Mark Derewicz and Andrew Schatzberg, formerly
of the Chapel Hill band The Daybreakers, will perform an acoustic
show. Each will also perform solo material throughout the evening.
Schatzberg
and Derewicz haven’t performed together in two
years but continued their careers on separate paths. Derewicz
began collaborating with his wife, while Schatzberg moved to
Santa Cruz to start another band called Oceanous. Schatzberg,
now living in Asheville, continued to forge ahead in typical
Daybreaker style, layering guitars, samples and keyboards. Mark
Derewicz, on the other hand, decided to learn how to play the
guitar, without relying on special effects and Schatzberg’s
Fender twin reverb amp. The duo will perform stripped down Daybreaker
songs, as well as new songs. The evening should be full of laughs
at the least, and spiritual highs, thanks to Maia, at the most.
