Featured Artist: Scott Curtis Machina Design produces paintings, prints, furniture, and sculpture. The studio's work can be seen online at www.machinadesign.com. "I've always been fascinated by what time and "damage" does to images and objects, and so I like to experiment with materials that can accelerate or simulate age and deterioration. I'm building a portfolio of new objects that explore how applications and processes like caustic agents, acids, and sandblasting interact with more traditional materials like gouache, acrylic, inks, dye transfers, and encaustic. Regardless of the subject or the medium, I want my work to strike a chord in the viewer with something in memory, probably something that's been lost. I don't want to represent just a face or a figure, and although I want to avoid simple nostalgia and sentimentality, I do try to evoke memories that feel like a reaching back - for something infused with desire, maybe of what life was and may be again." |
