"Strange Restaurant"

I said I'll take the T-bone steak
A soft voice mooed
Oh Wow! The waitress was a cow
I cried mistake-- forget the steak

I'll take the chicken instead
Then I heard a cluck
Twas just my luck
The busboy was a hen
I said okay no fowl today

I'll have the seafood dish
Then through the kitchen doors
The cook was a fish
I screamed is there anyone here
who is not an onion or a beet?
No you're sure? Ok then friends
A salads what I'll eat
They looked at me
Oh no they said
The owner is a cabbage head.

Investing in a Community Asset!

Last Monday we held our initial investor's meeting at the store. Both Pittsboro residents, and individuals from as far away as Pinehurst, got an opportunity to meet with the owners and discuss the improvements we are hoping to bring to the store in the near future.

If you have visited us in the last few months, you may have experienced some considerable waiting times during our most busy hours. By making these capital investments we hope to improve the speed by which we can serve everyone (and making both staff and customers happier).

Over the past several months the store has grown very fast and has nearly tripled its sales volume, but we are now at a stage where some additional investments are necessary to ensure the long term viability and stability of our beloved store. If have questions about investing in the store, please feel free to contact us at info@thegeneralstorecafe.com

Update on the Holly Tree Fundraiser—Funds Still Needed!

Thank you to all who have contributed to help save the old holly tree that stands across the street from the General Store Café. Because of your generous donations, we have managed to raise a total of $303.00. With these funds we will begin the first process of reconstruction.

The money will be used to trim the tree, which it badly needs, as the top of the tree is dead. Dead branches and tree rot will be removed. This old and grand tree, which has graced the center of Pittsboro for so many decades, could be one of the oldest Holly Trees in the nation. With community support and assistance, we hope to be able to save this tree. For years its root system has been smothered by asphalt, struggling to provide the water and nutrients that its branches need to live. That struggle has not been successful; the top of the tree is dead. With your continued support and financial assistance, we will be able to begin phase two: removal of the asphalt that smothers the roots of the tree.

The General Store Café is planning a meeting on Monday, August 11, to gather interest, support and raise awareness of our town’s oldest Holly tree.

Donations to save our oldest Holly Tree are being accepted by the General Store Cafe. Please send donations for the Holly Tree to "Holly Tree Rescue" c/o General Store Café, PO BOX 1651, Pittsboro, NC

Hello Neighbor!

Revive yourself with a Stay at Rosemary’s Bed and Breakfast!

Located in the heart of downtown Pittsboro, the charming 1912 Colonial Revival Bed and Breakfast provides a wonderful get-away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are plenty of quiet private spaces inside and out. The large front porch is shaded in the summer by gigantic sugar maples, and the back porch is the perfect place for bird watching. Just outside the back porch is an herb and perennial garden where 150 daylilies from Oxford Gardens were planted.

The house was built in 1912 by Logan Womble, a local Pittsboro businessman; the Womble family owned the house for 30 years until it was sold to Herb and Thelma Poole in the late 1950’s. Thelma worked in a hospital across the street, and when patients came from out of town to be treated, she and Herb offered them rooms in their home. The Poole house, as it was known, thus became a guest house. A couple of apartments were created and rented out as well. In February 2000, the innkeepers, Mac and Karen Pullen, bought the house from the Poole estate and have extensively renovated it. Check out their website at http://www.rosemary-bb.com/index.htm too see all the rooms. The new innkeepers renamed the guest house, Rosemary Bed and Breakfast because the herb rosemary, is traditionally held to be the herb of friendship and remembrance.

A Rosemary B& B guest will be greeted in the morning by the delicious smells of breakfast. A full cooked breakfast is served from 7am to 9am in the dining room, at the time of your choosing. Coffee, cocoa or tea is followed by juice and a fresh fruit plate. A special dish is prepared such as vegetarian Eggs Benedict, huevos rancheros, pecan French Toast with sautéed apples, or asparagus quiche. Rosemary-roasted potatoes often accompany the entree dish. Additionally, hot cracked-wheat cereal with apples, pecans, and raisins is always an option. And did we mention, their breads and muffins are home-made? Upon finishing this hearty breakfast, one can fill an afternoon browsing Pittsboro’s antique shops, art gallery, and S&T’s-a soda fountain that will take you back to the 40’s.

Rosemary’s Bed & Breakfast, though delightful for the out of town visitor, also appeals to the nearby resident for a relaxing get away. Rosemary B&B will help you celebrate special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, and honeymoons by offering a "Sweetheart Package." It’s a custom package, which includes flowers of your choosing, a bottle of wine or champagne, and a scrumptious dessert. With this package, you can surprise your sweetheart with this room full of romance! Stay at the Rosemary’s Bed and Breakfast this weekend, and receive half off your brunch this Sunday at the General Store Café.
