The General Store Cafe News
July 23, 2003
"Butterflies"

Frail Travelers, deftly flickering over the flowers;
O living flowers against the heedless blue

Of summer days, what sends them dancing through
This fiery-blossom'd revel of the hours?

Theirs are the musing silences between
The enraptured crying of shrill birds that make

Heaven in the wood while summer dawns awake;
And theirs the faintest winds that hush the green.

And they are as my soul that wings its way
Out of the starlit dimness into morn:

And they are as my tremulous being--born
To know but this, the phantom glare of day

by Siegfried Sassoon

Thursday, July 24 Blue Combo (Jazz) 8-10 pm

Featuring Bernie Petteway on guitar, Ed Butler on drums, and Rick Lassiter on double bass.

Friday, July 25 Dub Addis (Ethno Roots Reggae) 8-10 pm

With soulful melodies embedded in the polyrhythms of Africa, Dub Addis hails from the horn of Africa, Ethiopia. They are dedicated to writing their own material and their songs vary from traditional Ethiopian to American rhythm and blues, from Jamaican nyabingi to West African afro-beat. They are determined to bring a positive sound to the masses. The dub Addis philosophy:

We feel that whatever your labors and aspirations in this noisy confusion of life, one must keep peace in his/her soul. We must take kindly to the council of our elders. The wisdom we get from them, combined with the new generation's ideas, we can resolve tribalism/nationalism, sexism and racism.

Dub Addis features Dereje Tesfaye on lead vocals and keys, Fresew Taye on drums and vocals, Tre Tomson on bass and vocals, and Justin Cole on guitar and vocals.

Saturday, July 26 Matt Daniels (rock) 8-10 pm

Matt Daniels is the former lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player for Raleigh based band Chasing Edison. His versatile vocal ability and rhythmic guitar playing allow him to switch effortlessly from a ballad to modern rock. Matt knows hundreds of songs and is always happy to please a crowd by doing requests, which has lead to him being referred to as the "human jukebox."

Meet... Katrina!

This stunning black and white kitty is one easy-going girl. She is an indoor/outdoor cat and loves to spend her days lying in the grass dozing or chasing squirrels. She's the first one to join her foster mom when it's time to walk to the mailbox in the afternoons, and loves walks in the woods and climbing trees. Katrina gets along well with the other feline members of the household, and has lived with a dog in the past. She is very adaptable to a new environment, but would not be happy as a totally indoor cat. She is spayed and current on all vaccinations. For adoption, contact C.A.R.E. at www.chathamanimalrescue.org or 542-5757.

Chatham Shelter Spotlight (on behalf of the Chatham County Animal Shelter)

To meet Simba and her other feline and canine shelter companions who so urgently need homes, visit CCAS on Landfill Rd. off 64 west. Open Mon.-Fri., 9am-4pm, and Sat.10 am-2 pm.
