"Three Gates"

If you are tempted to reveal
A tale to you someone has told

About another, make it pass,
Before you speak, three gates of gold.
These narrow gates: First, "is it true?"
Then, "Is it needful?" In your mind

Give truthful answer. And the next
Is last and narrowest, "Is it kind?"

And if to reach your lips at last
It passes through these gateways three,
Then you may tell your tale, nor fear
What the result of speech my be.

Friday, August 15 - Candlewyck (bluegrass) 8pm-10pm

Candlewyck started as an acoustic duo founded by Chris Emerson and Ty Bennett of Charlotte, NC. Originally a guitar and mandolin group, Candlewyck soon became the title of a recording project that would feature Ty's original compositions and Chris’ exciting mandolin style. While working on these songs Chris and Ty recruited the help of some talented friends such as banjoist Steve Dilling (IIIrd Tyme Out) and producer Art Bordeaux. As word spread about the Candlewyck CD, more and more people wanted to take part.

Ultimately the CD became an all-star recording that features some of the finest talents in acoustic music. John Cowan (New Grass Revival), Joe Craven (David Grisman Quintet), Jim Hurst, Larry Rice and Michael Fath are just a few of the musicians that perform on the CD. Combining elements of rock, jazz and classical music, the Candlewyck project was recorded primarily at The Sound Farm studios in Charlotte with additional recording done in various other studios throughout North Carolina and Virginia. While this eclectic recording often hints at folk, country and popular music, it’s loaded with fresh ideas. The Candlewyck CD includes the hook-laden "Whatcha Gonna Say", the touching "Little Jasper" and the gospel barn-burner "Firemen". Firemen won won Best Bluegrass Song at the 2002 Independent Music Awards--not a small feat considering the thousands of entries and the fact that the judges included Arturo Sandoval, Ricky Skaggs and Tom Waits.

A live Candlewyck show guarantees excitement, variety and a lot of picking. The band performs music from the award winning CD as well as material to be released on a second record later this year.

Saturday, August 16 - Tommy Edwards and Friends (Bluegrass) 8-10pm

Tommy Edwards and his good friends Keith Thomas and Alice Zincone enjoy lots of different kinds of music. Their repertoire features selections from several musical styles including folk, country, bluegrass, swing and blues. Talented soloists and harmony singers, they are also extremely proficient instrumentalists.

Keith is an award winning guitarist and fiddler who is also a fine mandolinist. Tommy Edwards was twice named World Champion Bluegrass Guitarist, and Alice has played bass with several regional bands. Since deciding to perform together, Tommy, Keith and Alice have worked to accomplish three main goals: The first is to select material that is both meaningful and entertaining. The second is to make optimum use of their voices, either solo or in combination, so as to share the joy that they have in performing the music for their audiences. So whatever your musical taste, if you like great harmony singing with well played acoustic string instrument accompaniment (with a bit of humor mixed in) you’ll enjoy a performance by Tommy Edwards & Friends.

He gets along well with other dogs, although he would probably do well as an "only" dog, too. Reggie is a quick study and is taking to basic obedience training like a fish to water. He will be a dedicated and loyal friend. Reggie is neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed. To adopt Reggie, contact C.A.R.E. at www.chathamanimalrescue.org or call 542-5757.

Saturday, Sept. 13 - Clyde Edgerton book reading of Lunch at the Piccadilly at McIntyre's Bookstore (11:00am)

In his eighth deliciously funny novel, Lunch at the Piccadilly, Clyde Edgerton introduces us to the irrepressible Lil Olive, who's recently arrived at the Rosehaven Convalescence Center to recuperate from a bad fall. Lil longs to be back in her own apartment, and since her driver's license doesn't expire until her ninety-seventh birthday; she also longs to get back behind the wheel of her sporty '89 Olds. Keeping a watchful eye over Lil is Carl, Lil's middle-aged bachelor nephew with a heart of gold and the patience of a saint. To pass time until independence, Lil strikes up some new friendships, and with her new girlfriends, steals a car and hits the highway. Thus begins a funny adventure, one that will have you both laughing and crying all at the same time.

Clyde Edgerton is the author of seven previous novels, including bestsellers Raney and Walking Across Egypt. Five of his novels have been New York Times Notables. An accomplished musician, he performs around the country with his band, Rick Strangers. He is a professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
